Beyond Tigers

While the Bengal Tiger reigns, Kanha's most iconic resident is the Hard Ground Barasingha (Swamp Deer), the park's key conservation success story. The successful revival of this majestic animal makes Kanha the only place in the world where this subspecies can be seen thriving.

The park’s ecosystem, built upon sprawling grasslands and dense Sal and Bamboo forests, supports a rich cast of other wildlife, including the muscular Indian Gaur (Bison), packs of highly social Dhole (Wild Dogs), the secretive Indian Leopard, and the shaggy-coated Sloth Bear. Large herds of Chital (Spotted Deer) and Sambar Deer are ubiquitous, providing the foundation for the food chain.

Kanha offers a profoundly complete wildlife experience, extending beyond the great mammals to its avian life, with over 300 bird species like the vibrant Indian Roller and the elegant Paradise Flycatcher. The intricate balance of this landscape from the alarm calls of langurs that warn of a tiger's approach, to the smallest creatures inhabiting the meadows allows visitors to immerse themselves fully in the robust Central Indian wilderness.
